Rita Wegmüller has an MSc in Food Science and a PhD in Nutrition from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. She then worked for the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, Switzerland, as a Research Associate and Monitor of clinical trials on the testing of new drugs against malaria and African sleeping sickness. She re-joined the Human Nutrition Laboratory of ETH Zurich as a Senior Scientist in 2007. She has conducted and supervised studies in various countries in Africa. In October 2012 she joined the ING as Head of Station of the group’s field station in Keneba, The Gambia.
She has conducted research in the area of prevention and combat of micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron, zinc and iodine in developing countries. Her current research is dedicated to the investigation of the contribution of tropical diseases and infection to anaemia, the mechanism behind and the safety of iron interventions. As Head of Station in Keneba, she overseas all ongoing research projects within the Nutrition Programme in The Gambia.
