Background

Amat Bah is currently the Deputy Executive Director of the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) of The Gambia. He studied Public Health at The Gambia College School of Public Health from 1982 – 1985 and joined the then Nutrition Unit of the Ministry of Health as a Nutrition Assistant. Amat studied for his BSc degree in Applied Human Nutrition at Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh in 1995 – 1998 for his MSc in Public Health Nutrition at LSHTM. Amat has worked in various areas of nutrition over the past two decades and is in charge of the micronutrient deficiency control programme for The Gambia. His area of special interest is anaemia control among pregnant women and children and he has successfully coordinated a holistic pilot community based integrated anaemia control programme that is being scaled-up to 100 communities with the support of the World Bank.

Research

Amat is enrolled at LSHTM on an MRC studentship. He is pursuing a PhD on the Development and Evaluation of a New Hepcidin Based Marker for Iron Deficiency. It is hoped that this research will contribute to finding a solution for a simple test for assessing iron deficiency and anaemia in developing countries.
