The Nutrition Theme of MRC Unit, The Gambia is closely linked to the MRC International Nutrition Group (ING) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and to MRC Human Nutrition Research in Cambridge. Much of our work is based at MRC Keneba where the current Head of Station is Dr Rita Wegmuller.
MRC Keneba is a rural fieldstation situated in the rural subsistence-farming region of West Kiang, 4 hours by road from the Unit’s main laboratories at MRC Fajara. The MRC has had a research presence in the area since 1948 and enjoys an excellent relationship with the local community.
We work with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through close collaborations with the Gambian National Nutrition Agency (NaNA).
Our research focuses largely on maternal and child health and has 4 major research themes concentrating on: early growth and development; iron, infection and anemia; nutritional genetics and epigentics; and calcium, vitamin D and bone health.
